The first of this year's youth orchestra Proms includes a new celebratory fantasy from Scotland with echoes of Gaelic bagpipes and a "curious folk song" called The Crabfish, a powerful concerto, and a symphony of fantastic visions which takes up the Proms theme of magic and mystery.

With this year's BBC Proms season featuring many of Elgar's greatest orchestral works, David Owen Norris conducts an investigation into Elgar the virtuoso orchestral composer.
How did this Worcester piano tuner's son who learnt his craft at the great choral festivals and did not write a symphony until he was 50 ever become an orchestral composer at all? With contributions from Elgar experts, lovers and performers both British and American, including Jerrold Northrop Moore, Anthony Payne, Diana McVeagh, Michael Kennedy, Colin Matthews, Stephen Banfield and Leonard Slatkin - who conducts Elgar's Symphony No 2 at the Proms on 11 August.

The unperformed final act of Weill's trenchant biblical drama The Eternal Road is given its Proms premiere at the Royal Albert Hall, London. At its heart is the age-old conflict between war and peace, tellingly contrasted with the innocence of a child's view of heaven in the finale of Mahler's symphony.

BBC Symphony Orchestra, conductor Matthias Bamert
