Equally well known on stage, screen and television, he is currently playing Boss Whelan in the Royal National Theatre production of Tennessee Williams's play Not about Nightingales in Houston, Texas. His musical tastes are wide-ranging, from instrumental music by Beethoven, Britten, Schoenberg and Tippett, to a Puccini aria, an Irving Berlin number and Freddie Mercury singing Bohemian Rhapsody.

From the Royal Albert Hall, London. Verdi's crowning triumph is brought vividly to life in a period instrument performance with a glittering international cast. Falstaff, the bittersweet Shakesperean comedy, was Verdi's final opera and includes some of his most lyrical and high-spirited music - a glorious fruit of his Indian summer.
Monteverdi Choir. Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, conductor John Eliot Gardiner
Act 1; Act 2, Scene 1
8.30 Verdi: the Unlikely Englishman Roger Parker traces the little-known story of Verdi and England that culminated in his last opera, Falstaff. In a tour taking him around London and into the English countryside, Parker argues that seemingly unremarkable moments of contact between Verdi and England tell us much about the composer's music and his politics.
