Michael Berkeley is joined by film director Anthony Minghella , who first shot to international fame with Truly Madly Deeply and continued his meteoric rise with The English Patient, which swept the board at last year's Oscars ceremony. As might be expected from the reincarnation scene in Truly Madly Deeply,
Minghella is a great fan of Bach's instrumental music, which figures in this programme alongside works by Puccini and Vivaldi and songs by Van Morrison , Prince and Billie Holiday. Executive producer Wendy Thompson Repeated tomorrow 6.30pm

The establishment of Preservation
Hall in 1961 threw a lifeline to traditional jazz and jazz musicians.
Against all expectations the hall has not only kept going but become very profitable. In a six-part series, Michael Pointon considers its achievements. 4: The Second Line
With the success of the hall, musicians from Europe gravitated towards New Orleans to learn about the old music at its source. In
Preservation Hall itself, the delicate strains of the New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra contrasted with the robust jazz usually on offer. Repeated Friday 12.30am

From the Metropolitan Opera House, New York. Wagner's romantic opera is about the shining white knight Lohengrin, who appears on a swan to defend the honour of the pure Elsa against the machinations of the evil Ortrud and Telramund, and who has to return to the castle when Elsa forces him to reveal his identity as a knight of the Holy Grail. The opera has always exerted a strong hold on audiences, with its highly perfumed mysticism and stark delineation of good and evil. Tonight's performance features some of the leading Wagner interpreters of our time, including the Heldentenor Ben Heppner.

Six lectures reflecting on the forces for change at the end of the century. 5: A Balance Sheet
George Steiner considers how the future will assess the 20th century. It may pass into history as the century of the growth of rights of the child. But Steiner suggests that it is the revolution in information technology that will come to dominate history's view of our time, as it will fundamentally change the human condition. The lecture is chaired by Bryan Appleyard and is followed by questions from the audience in the Queen Elizabeth Hall , London.
