His music selection also includes Musorgsky's A Night on the Bare Mountain is performed by the London Philharmonic (conductor Klaus Tennstedt ) at 6.00, and Canteloube's Bailero from the Songs of the Auvergne follows the 7.00 news, sung by Frederica von Stade (mezzo), with the Royal Philharmonic. There is ballet music at 7.15 from Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, and, following the news at 8.00, Zubin Mehta conducts the Los Angeles PO in Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man.

Since then, his zeal for the examination of performance styles has led him to more recent areas of the repertoire. Joan Bakewell talks to him about his attempts to understand what composers like Beethoven and Berlioz were trying to convey in their music.

Ever since the early Renaissance, composers have been drawn to the Lamentations of Jeremiah - the Old Testament verses mourning the destruction of Jerusalem. Paul Guinery introduces Francois Couperin's celebrated setting of these words - his three Lecons de Tenebres - performed by Gerard Lesne and Steve Dugardin (high tenors) and II Seminario Musicale. The lessons are interspersed with plainchant sung by baritone Josep Cabre.
