The Sounding the Century Lectures

on BBC Radio 3

Six lectures reflecting on the forces for change at the end of the century. 5: A Balance Sheet
George Steiner considers how the future will assess the 20th century. It may pass into history as the century of the growth of rights of the child. But Steiner suggests that it is the revolution in information technology that will come to dominate history's view of our time, as it will fundamentally change the human condition. The lecture is chaired by Bryan Appleyard and is followed by questions from the audience in the Queen Elizabeth Hall , London.
