There are five swimming gold medals at stake, and British hopes are pinned on Sarah Hardcastle in the 800m freestyle - an event in which she won a bronze medal

Linford Christie begins the challenge to defend his 100m crown today at 4pm. This is followed by round one of the women's 400m, and then Britain's Steve Smith and Dalton Grant appear in the qualifying event for the men's high jump. Plus, the early rounds of the women's 100m and the men's shot put. The first track medal will be decided today in the men's 20km walk. With commentary by David Coleman, Stuart Storey, Paul Dickenson and Brendan Foster.

The three-day eventing individual competition - which is separated for the first time from the team event - reaches its conclusion with the show jumping. Are British expectations of a medal justified?

In the swimming pool, Britain's Commonwealth champion Adam Ruckwood competes for a coveted place in the 200m backstroke final.

There is also action in the rowing, tennis, cycling and shooting events.

World triple jump champion Jonathan Edwards launches his bid for an Olympic title in the qualifying competition starting at 11.10pm. World Championship bronze medallist Kelly Holmes and the re-instated Diane Modahl are in action in the first round of the women's 800m, while 1984 Olympic champion Tessa Sanderson begins her quest for a second gold medal in the javelin qualifying competition at 10.30pm.
Britain's talented trio of 400m runners, Roger Black, Du'aine Ladejo and Iwan Thomas, start out in the first round at midnight.
