Highlights of the overnight action from Atlanta. Britain's Linford Christie was hoping to retain his Olympic 100m crown, while Jonathan Edwards was going for gold in the triple jump to add to the world title and world record he secured last year.
The men's 400m heats continued with the strong British trio of Roger Black, Du'aine Ladejo and Iwan Thomas all bidding for a place in the semi-finals. Kelly Holmes was also expected to go into the 800m semi-finals. And 1984 Olympic champion Tessa Sanderson was hoping for another medal in the javelin.

This year, with Ferrari, things have not been going well for the world champion. Will his car last this race, enabling him to take advantage of the support of the German crowd?

Two of Britain's big hopes for athletics gold were in the blocks for the first time in Atlanta this morning. Sally Gunnell, bidding to retain her Olympic title, went into the opening round of the 400m hurdles. Colin Jackson was also in action in the 110m hurdles, the only major title to elude him.

Steve Smith and Dalton Grant are Britain's main hopes in the high-jump final, while Ireland's Sonia O'Sullivan is another world champion looking for a title in the 5,000m final. Britain's Commonwealth champion Denise Lewis could make it onto the medal rostrum after the final event of the heptathlon, the 800m.
