Overnight action from Atlanta of particular interest to British medal hopes includes Colin Jackson and Tony Jarrett in the heats of the 110m hurdles. Jackson is world record holder and former world champion but, in his best Olympic performance to date, had to settle for silver in the 1988 Games in Seoul.

Another runner hoping to add the Olympic title to world honours is Ireland's Sonia O'Sullivan in the 5,000m. Also in competition were Steve Smith and Dalton Grant in the high jump and Denise Lewis in the conclusion of the heptathlon.
Phenomenal American Michael Johnson is a prohibitive favourite for the men's 400m, but a strong British semi-final contingent is expected to feature new British record holder Roger Black , Duaine Ladejo and Iwan Thomas.
Medals were also to be due to be decided in gymnastics, yachting, weightlifting and water polo. Presented by Steve Rider and Hazel Irvine.

The British men's hockey team, Olympic champions in 1988, face the powerful
Australians, who claimed the silver medal in Barcelona four years ago.
Hopes are high for British success as the team show-jumping competition gets underway. Barcelona in 1992 produced a shock result as the unfancied Dutch and Austrian teams took gold and silver.
On the track, Jon Ridgeon, having transferred from the 110m hurdles and recovered from injuries that have blighted his career, goes in the first round of the 400m hurdles at 4.45pm. The women's 100m hurdles, men's 1500m and women's triple jump all continue. Plus, archery, badminton and volleyball.

Olympic history could be made tonight as Carl Lewis seeks to win a record ninth gold. Victory in the long-jump final, one of seven events decided tonight, would be his fourth in a row. Kelly Holmes is one of the contenders in the women's 800m, but Cuba's Ana Quirot will provide strong opposition. World Champion Allen Johnson is the biggest obstacle standing between Colin Jackson and Tony Jarrett and an elusive Olympic gold in the 110m hurdles final. The world record may be in danger from American Michael Johnson in the 400m final, while defending 400m hurdles champion Sally Gunnell lines up in the semi-finals.
