When the first Irish Sweeps Derby was held in 1962 Irish racing joined the big time. Gone were the days when the Irish Derby was just another horse race, and the premier event of the racing year in Ireland now ranks as one of the big races of the world.
This afternoon on the plain of the Curragh the 1967 renewal of the race will be held and horses from Britain, France, and Ireland will be running over a mile and a half not only for the £80,000 in prize money but for the prestige and stud value that victory can bring - two previous winners, Meadow Court and Ragusa, have each been syndicated as stallions for £400,000.
The Irish are very keen on their horses because the horse breeding industry is an important part of the country's economy. However, what will interest most of the huge crowd today will be their own economy as they seek to find the winner. The British challenge will be headed by Ribocco (Lester Piggott) and Dart Board (Scobie Breasley) who finished second and third in the Epsom Derby.
