"It's a thankless job.... The more successful an opera director is in Vienna, the less chance he will have to survive ... They want quality and when they have it they do anything they can to destroy it."
That is the American conductor Lorin Maazel's assessment at the end of his surprisingly brief reign as director of the Vienna State Opera, one of the most powerful - but precarious - jobs in music. Maazel's illustrious predecessors include Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Karl Bohm and Herbert von Karajan. Every one of them left office unhappily - bruised, embittered or simply exhausted.
Presented by Richard Baker, this film follows Maazel through his last months at the Staatsoper and through the relentless criticism that led to his premature farewell to Vienna.
