Five films exploring narrow-gauge railways. 2: Journey to the Land Beyond the Mountains
Written and narrated by Ray Gosling Once a year the trains carry the army of grape pickers to the steep, terraced slopes of the River Douro in northern Portugal. To the sounds of singing, dancing and exploding dynamite the whole valley celebrates the harvest which will make the famous port wine. Higher into the mountains, the little lines enter a region that's mysterious even to the Portuguese - land of proud people, strange primitive traditions - and secret smugglers' routes into Spain.

Introduced by Humphrey Burton
Tonight's programme encounters an American in London and a Londoner in New York.
The American is the artist James McNeill Whistler. Born 150 years ago this month Whistler, known to most for a portrait of his mother, was outrageous and controversial. This film, presented by the painter and art lecturer Douglas Skeggs , and with Jon Pertwee as Whistler, sketches out the artist's years in London and his conflict with the world of Victorian art.
The Londoner is the composer Jim Parker who this evening conducts the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble in the television premiere of 'A Londoner in New York'. The piece, in five brief movements, is based on Parker's own impressions of Manhattan and tonight's performance mingles the composer's evocative music with breath-taking images from one of the world's most exciting cities.

The 1984 Formula One World Championship Dallas Grand Prix
Round eight of the Formula One World Championship and the first of the season's new tracks - Dallas - and J. R. Ewing would savour the current Grand Prix story.
Reigning World Champion NELSON PIQUET has come good at last - a second successive victory two weeks ago in Detroit. Are the season's leaders so far, McLaren's ALAIN PROST and NIKI LAUDA, going to be pipped at the post? Today's race in the Dallas Fair Park where J.R. himself once had a memorable confrontation, could add another twist to the worldwide Grand Prix television drama.
A twisty street race of 2i miles, this afternoon's meeting of machine and men will be run in high heat and humidity - and there'll be plenty of oil for everyone.
