The Ladies' Singles Championship was first played in 1884 and celebrations to mark the centenary occasion will continue throughout this fortnight of tennis, with many of the great past champions present. Perhaps the greatest of them all, MARTINA NAVRATILOVA , starts her defence of the title she won last year for the fourth time in six years. Her victory in the French Open a fortnight ago completed a remarkable Grand Slam and such is her dominance in the ladies' game, it seems inconceivable that she will be beaten. Today, however, 127 others will seek to prove she can and they include HANA MANDLIKOVA, the only woman to beat Miss Navratilova this year, and CHRIS LLOYD , a three-time winner here.
