Stuttgart. The opening day of an event second only in importance to the Olympics. Linford Christie is among the first of the British athletes in action, starting his attempt to add the world 100m title to the Olympic gold he won so memorably in Barcelona; the first round takes place this morning. Also, action from the men's 400m heats where the likes of Michael Johnson , Butch Reynolds and Quincy Watts form a formidable American team. David Grindley , winner of the European Cup earlier in the season, leads the British challenge. The women's 400m also gets under way today. It is the 23rd century: the battle-scarred starship Enterprise limps home, only surviving because of the late Captain Spock's self-sacrifice. However, while the Vulcan's body lies on the Genesis planet, a man-made Eden, his presence is still felt among the crew.
Against orders, Admiral Kirk decides to lead the search for Spock and bring him home. Leonard Nimoy also makes a brief appearance as Spock.
