Linford Christie is among the first of the British athletes in action, starting his attempt to add the world 100m title to the Olympic gold he won so memorably in Barcelona; the first round takes place this morning. Also, action from the men's 400m heats where the likes of Michael Johnson , Butch Reynolds and Quincy Watts form a formidable American team. David Grindley , winner of the European Cup earlier in the season, leads the British challenge. The women's 400m also gets under way today.
