The Second World War could well have started a year earlier than it did-not on September 3, 1939, but in the last week of September 1938. Then the British Prime Minister of the day, Neville Chamberlain, flew to Germany for a final attempt to reach a settlement with Hitler in the dispute over Nazi Germany's demands on Czechoslovakia. They met in a city which has become a symbol of Britain's pre-war policy of appeasing the dictators-Munich.
Tuesday's Documentary tells the dramatic story of this crisis of peace or war. Among those taking part are Sir Alec Douglas-Home, M.P. (then Chamberlain's Parliamentary Private Secretary) and Dr. Paul Schmidt (Hitler's interpreter).

Leopold Stokowski, the veteran conductor now in his eighties, is one of the most legendary, enigmatic, and controversial personalities in music. He was born in London and was sometime organist of St. James's, Piccadilly, before going to America where he made his musical career. In this first of two programmes he speaks of his early life and recalls his work with the American orchestras, notably the Philadelphia, whose tone he made famous throughout the world.
