Last year, Anthony Hamilton caused a major upset at this stage with his surprise 13-9 defeat of the then world number one Mark Williams. While Hamilton secured a comfortable victory over the Welshman, he confessed to an attack of nerves in the final frames of the match, on account of his defeat by Williams in the final of the China Open. This year, however, has seen changes of fortune for both players: while Williams has his eye on a hat-trick of major titles after winning both the UK championship and Masters, Hamilton is not appearing in this year's tournament.
