The Roots of Alex Haley
Alex Haley 's Roots was one of the biggest-selling books of the century and became a hugely successful television series. But soon afterthe book hit the shelves there were accusations of fraud and, after Haley died, articles supporting this stance appeared in the New York newspaper Village Voice. This programme examines the truth behind Roots and asks whether, given the work's cultural significance, these charges really mattered.
