Dame Catherine Cookson OBE, author and darling of the public library romance section, turned 90 on 20 June this year. Around the world, her work sells at a rate of four copies every minute.
The woman who had her first novel, Kate Hannigan, published when she was 44, and went on to pen such favourites as The Mallen Streak, The Cinder Path and The Devil and Mary Ann as well as her autobiography Our Kate was born into a life of abject poverty near the Tyne docks in Jarrow. From those humble beginnings, she was later to be honoured as Britain's most popular author.
She takes time to look back over her life in this documentary which uses archive footage and includes contributions from Melvyn Bragg, Richard Hoggart, Denise Robertson and Alan Plater. Narrated by John Woodvine.
