The traumas of Beckett's formative years are covered in this opening segment: his ill-fated love affair with his first cousin, the death of his father, and his decorated service with the French Resistance. Beckett had settled in France before the Second World War, met fellow Irishman James Joyce, and began writing. Patrick Magee's classic television performance in Krapp's Last Tape is interwoven with key landscapes and personalities from Beckett's life. Narrated by Ronald Pickup.

Claire Halasz and Tony Maglica met in California in 1971. At the time they were both married to other people, but within a year they were living together and running Tony's struggling machine shop. Then Tony developed a design for a heavy-duty torch with a focus-able beam. It was called the Maglite, and by 1991 the Mag Instrument company was worth an estimated $300 million.
Arguments over the ownership of the business led to a split, and Claire took
