Fifth in a nine-part series taking a a look inside America's courtrooms.
Claire Halasz and Tony Maglica met in California in 1971. At the time they were both married to other people, but within a year they were living together and running Tony's struggling machine shop. Then Tony developed a design for a heavy-duty torch with a focus-able beam. It was called the Maglite, and by 1991 the Mag Instrument company was worth an estimated $300 million.
Arguments over the ownership of the business led to a split, and Claire took
Tony to court, suing for half the company. The combination of money and broken relationships proved irresistible to US viewers. Sue Ellicott looks back.
