Adventurer Benedict Allen is the real-life answerto Hollywood's intrepid Indiana Jones. Undaunted by drug traffickers, hostile natives and ferocious wild beasts, he ventures into an uncharted area of the Peruvian rainforest in search of the terrifying giant snake of the Amazon that patrols the legendary Wild Lake. A very wary local tribal chief accompanies him part of the way but, armed only with a camcorder and a machete, he is left to make the final push alone.

Anxious not to change, the menfolk of the 50s immediately take the decision to obliterate the 1970s from the pages of history by sendinga squadron of Second World War bombers on a mission of destruction. Since 1919, when Jack Dempsey fought Jess Willard in the first filmed world title fight, the faces of boxing's heavyweight champions have become among the most instantly recognisable in the sporting world. Their lives - colourful, glamorous, inescapably violent, impossibly opulent - have enjoyed universal public appeal throughout the years.
Often, their influence has transcended the ring, and heavyweight boxers have been invested with a wider social and political significance.
Joe Louis's one-round destruction of Max Schmeling in the 1930s was, for example, hailed as a triumph for American values over Nazi intolerance and oppression. And, more recently, the violently unpredictable behaviour of Mike Tyson prior to his incarceration for rape dominated news headlines.
The juxtaposition of life's extremes in rags-to-riches-to-rags-again stories has provided fertile ground for film-makers the world over. This Fine Cut special, full of archive footage and interviews, serves as a social panorama of the 20th century as seen through the lives of the men who have held the greatest prize in sport. A documentary, opening the New York Stories season of tales from deep within the urban jungle.
In the safety of a taxicab, under the cover of night, people often reveal facts about themselves they would otherwise keep secret. Over a four-week period, cameras were secreted in a New York City cab with a driver chosen for his ability to strike up intimate conversations with his passengers.
In the course of the journeys, an off-duty cop talks about death in a chilling, matter-of-fact manner, a man recounts the tragedy that led to homelessness, and a prostitute and mother tells of her struggle with hard-drug addiction. The acutely frank disclosures reveal a rich core of dark personalities at the heart of the city known as the Big Apple.

The New York Stories season continues with Martin Scorsese's black comedy starring Griffin Dunne, Rosanna Arquette.

A night out in Manhattan becomes a nightmare for hapless computer expert Paul Hackett when his date, Marcy Franklin , leads him from one bizarre adventure into another.
