Another Bite of the Cherry
To mark the 20th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich 'sdeath, this documentary analyses the origins of his only musical, Cheryomushki, composed in 1958. Taking its title from the first of Moscow's high-rise flats built under Kruschev, the piece thrived in the liberal atmosphere that briefly prevailed between the oppressive regimes of Stalin and Brezhnev. It pokes fun at the middle classes, belittles members of the Communist
Party, and demonstrates a witty, charming, sometimes frivolous side to the character of the Russian composer.
Current residents of the real-life
Cheryomushki estate, now a slum, talk of their disaffection at the failure of Russian dream. It is a failure their dwellings have come to symbolise.

By 1974, Muhammad Ali was considered to be a faded boxing force, a shadow of the mercurial youngster who shocked the world a decade earlier. He was older, slower and had lost three of his best years because of a refusal to serve in the Vietnam War.
World champion George Foreman was at his peak, a fearsome fighting machine who had annihilated previously unbeaten Joe Frazier to win the title. He was, as his trainer called him, "a monster", considered invincible.
But when Foreman defended against Ali in Zaire, Ali defied the passage of time, taunting the champion with his famous "rope-a-dope" policy before winning in the eighth. By doing so, he became only the second man to regain the heavyweight title.
Extensive highlights of that momentous night in the heart of Africa celebrate his against-the-odds victory while friends and critics reveal how Ali surpassed even himself in his greatest triumph. Narrated by Michael Parkinson.

In August 1975, the face of British rock music was fundamentally changed: the Sex Pistols were formed. A host of colourful characters, including the Damned's Captain Sensible, Richard Hell, Jerry Nolan from the New York Dolls, and the legendary Bromley Contingent, remember the halcyon days of the movement that influenced a generation.

Biographical drama starring Gary Oldman, Chloe Webb

New York, October 1978: police arrive at the Chelsea Hotel to find Sid Vicious, bass player with notorious English punk group the Sex Pistols, in a drug-induced stupor, holding a knife. Nearby lies the body of his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen, dead from stab wounds. Their stormy relationship had lasted barely a year.

Showing as part of BBC2's punk evening, Alex Cox's film provides an unflinching portrait of the nihilistic world shared by the doomed lovers.
