As South Africa
I prepares for its first democratic elections, this new six-part documentary series looks at the lives of six very different citizens. Filmed over the last year, it goes beyond the country's public face to explore the hopes and fears of the people as a new South Africa is born.
The first film, Township
Tango, follows 27-year-old nurse Dorothy Mphahlele , who has a passion for ballroom dancing. She says it is "a chance for us blacks to show the whites how good we are," " but thinks the politics of ballroom dancing are little different from the politics of the country: "The white judges favour the white dancers so they are always champions."
Her boyfriend Mandia
S'hlakula is a detective sergeant. He tries to remain apolitical but is not optimistic about the country's future. "I am sure there will be civil war here soon," he says grimly. Series producer Christopher Terrill
Executive producer Paul Hamann
Followed by Sarajevo - a Street under Siege
