Why do men tell mother-in-law jokes? Why do daughters-in-law find their husband's mother difficult to deal with? Other cultures seem to manage the relationship better, so is it a peculiarly British problem?
Shown just two days before Mothering Sunday, this documentary takes a semi-serious look at the least popular of our relations. Using clips from comics such as Les Dawson and Mike Reid, as well as from films and sitcoms, comedian Tom O'Connor, agony aunt Irma Kurtz and marital psychotherapist Judy Hildebrand offer their opinions on this phenomenon.
And people tell of their personal experiences of mothers-in-law including Beryl Bainbridge who was nearly shot by hers and, possibly most extraordinary of all, the man who married his.
