Over 150 million children, some as young as 5 and 6, are at work in the world today. Actress Helen Mirren examines this phenomenon and follows the lives of a family of young girls working in Pakistan's carpet factories. It costs a minimum
£10 million each year to run a team in Formula 1 motor racing - and it cannot be done without sponsorship. "We tend not to call them sponsors, " says
EkremSami.marketingchiefat McLaren. "We see them as investors."
On sale is global exposure with an estimated one in ten of the world's population watching each race on television. This fifth programme in the series following McLaren's
Grand Prix season shows how these "investors" are courted at
Silverstone or offered lavish hospitality in Monaco.
The deals contribute to the £750,000 it costs to build a car, the L 100, 000 for each engine, the £1,300 for one setof tyres, and, of course, the drivers' contracts.
McLaren's biggest sponsor is the tobacco giant Philip Morris and team boss Ron Dennis justifies it, at a time when many countries are banning cigarette advertising, by saying: "We are promoting a brand name, not an act. If people really feel that exposure to a brand name has some influence on them, then don't watch. Have a choice, turn the television off."
