Sounds of Islands. From the storm-tossed north Atlantic, the Sound of Harris provides the only navigable seaway through the island barrier of the Outer Hebrides. With racing currents and dangerous reefs, the Sound is a sailor's nightmare, but its many windswept islands captivate all who relish wild places. In the past, these islands supported large communities which made a virtue of a self-sufficient existence at the sea's edge. Now they are mostly uninhabited and echo only to the sounds of seals and seabirds. Narrated by Isla Blair. Produced and filmed by Alan McGregor Series editor Mike Salisbury ● STEREO

For ten months film crews in Sri Lanka, Mozambique, Liberia and Kurdistan followed the French emergency organisation, Medecins sans Frontieres, the world's largest medical charity. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, MSF was founded by doctors who had taken part in the Paris student riots of the late 60s and kept their idealism. It is famous for putting its people into the world's most dangerous places - behind battle lines, at the heart of famines - where they help anyone who is sick or injured, taking no sides.
"Conditions are hard but one doesn't complain; then suddenly we are attacked, killed, raped - that is not part of the plan."
Narrated by Daniel Day-Lewis .

First showing on network television for this film starring Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, Oprah Winfrey

Georgia, 1909: Celie, a teenage mother parted from her children, is married off to a brutal widower, Albert Johnson. So begins a life of servitude and maltreatment, but Celie's indomitable will sees her through to a brighter future.

Steven Spielberg's sumptuous Oscar-nominated interpretation of Alice Walker's Pulitzer prize-winning novel features remarkable performances from Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey, who is probably better known for hosting her own television chat show.
