Mozart is said to have dashed off this operatic masterpiece in a mere 18 days in the last summer of his life. Written for the coronation festivities of Leopold II in Prague,
La Clemenza di Tito is a story of love, betrayal and forgiveness, set among the corridors of power in ancient Rome. This production by Nicholas Hytner - returning to opera after his West End triumph with the musical Miss Saigon - was mounted at Glyndebourne to mark the bicentenary of the composer's death. Introduced by H C Robbins Landon , music historian and Mozart specialist. Tito, Emperor of Rome.... PHILIP LANGRIDGE

The first of a double bill of films directed in the early 1930s by the acclaimed French film-maker Jean Vigo. A definitive statement on school life and the nature of authority based largely on Vigo's own experiences as a pupil in two provincial boarding schools. By turns a hilarious satire and a bitter indictment of the education system, the film has been the subject of controversy since it was released (and immediately banned) in France 40 years ago. Its unique quality of dreamlike fantasy has influenced countless directors since then. A French film with English subtitles.

Vigo's tragically short career gave the world two undoubted masterpieces. Once mercilessly hacked by its production company, this film has now been lovingly restored. The young captain of the barge L Atalante, brings his bride to share life on board the vessel with a boy and a crusty first mate. Disappointed with the monotony of her new world, she pines for the city. A French film with English subtitles.
