Three hundred years ago, Britain's powerful trading operation, the East India Company, leased three villages on the banks of the River Hooghli in Bengal. They quickly grew into one of the world's largest cities and the powerful second city of the British Empire. But the Empire has gone and Calcuttans have inherited a reputation for survival in one of the harshest urban environments in the world. This programme looks at 24 hours in the lives of five of these survivors. They include Bapi, an 11-year-old street urchin, Sunita, who runs a family and the tea stall that is also her home, and Baleshwar, who cremates bodies on the banks of the River Hooghli.
