On a freezing day in February, scientists and engineers from the Carl Zeiss optics company stood in silent protest in Cosmonauts' Square, in Jena, East Germany. For 45 years the company had been sealed behind the Iron Curtain, denied access to western science and scientists. Now, less than a year since reunification, and after surviving two world wars and near destruction by Russian occupiers, the company faces bankruptcy and the loss of at least two-thirds of jobs.
