'How many more people have to die, like my sister Christine, before we get the services that we so desperately need?' Tony Slowley 's sister died from sickle cell anaemia. He and another sister have the disease too. There are about

On a freezing day in February, scientists and engineers from the Carl Zeiss optics company stood in silent protest in Cosmonauts' Square, in Jena, East Germany. For 45 years the company had been sealed behind the Iron Curtain, denied access to western science and scientists. Now, less than a year since reunification, and after surviving two world wars and near destruction by Russian occupiers, the company faces bankruptcy and the loss of at least two-thirds of jobs.
