Pesticides: Safe or Suspect? Intensive farming relies for its success not only on good weather but the dispersal of £350 million worth of pesticides each year.
Pesticides are a vital aid, say the farmers, for the efficient mass production of cheap food.
The agrochemical industry says it has a good safety record, but environmentalists, amid growing public concern about the potential hazards pesticides may cause to our health, claim modem farming is running on a 'chemical treadmill'.
David Lomax examines the case for and against the continued use of pesticides. He talks to people who claim their health has been badly affected by accidental contamination and investigates allegations of official secrecy surrounding the system for approving pesticides. Producer ROBERT BUFTON

Cervical Screening - a Service at the Crossroads? Since its start, the cervical screening programme has been dogged by controversy. For years arguments have raged about efficiency and value for money.
Now there's new evidence that thousands of women are given treatment to prevent cervical cancer that is unnecessary and, in some cases, may actually harm their health.

Eight travellers along the world's great highways. The Salt Road with writer
William Shawcross.
'To enter the Medina at Fez seemed to me to be whirled right out of the 20th century. Like Alice and the White
Rabbit, we tumbled down and round into an extraordinary medieval world.'
Author William Shawcross sets off down the old Sahara Salt Road to find the camel caravans that still draw pillars of salt out of the fiery depths of the Tenere desert. His journey brings him in contact with a sultan, some dinosaur hunters and an ancient nation struggling to survive. By the remote salt pans of Bilma he finds
Afarnou, a descendant of the fearsome Tuareg - once lords of the desert - and joins him as he hauls salt across one of the harshest trade routes in the world. Music composed by BRIAN GASCOIGNE
