Jazz Types
Second of six programmes. Tommy is only one of five saxophonists in the programme, as his guests are the 29th Street Saxophone Quartet from New York. It used to be unusual for saxes to play without rhythm section accompaniment, but sax quartets are now frequently heard in jazz and the 29th Street are among the best.
Tommy joins the Quartet for two specially-composed pieces; and a Charlie Parker tune becomes the vehicle for an old-fashioned cutting contest.
