Alan Foster and Billy Riley were made redundant. Both worked for one company since leaving school at 16. Both are married with one child.
But Alan was a section manager in the City bank, Morgan Grenfell. With a new house and a E70,000 mortgage, he was shocked. Billy, a fitter in the state-owned shipyard in Sunderland, was more optimistic. He owned his house and had money in the bank.
