Hugh O'Shaughnessy,
Latin America correspondent of The Observer, introduces Allan Frankovich's acclaimed three-part investigation of the United States's involvement in Central America. 2: El Salvador
In a country the size of Wales and with a population of five-and-a-half million, an estimated 70,000 people have now 'disappeared' or lost their lives in ten years of vicious civil war.
Constructing his film around such incidents of international infamy as the assassination of Archbishop Romero and the murder of four American churchwomen, Frankovich deploys newsreel and interview to devastating effect. He elicits testimony across the political spectrum - from left-wing guerrillas, through State Department spokesmen, to the country's notorious security forces - leaving a picture of a small and once dynamic nation awaiting the assumption to power, next month, of the right-wing ARENA party.
