In 1979, Anastasio Somoza was overthrown by a popular uprising and a dynasty of dictators had come to an end. The victors were a coalition of priests, Marxists and nationalists, known as the Sandinistas. The ideological mix made a confrontation with their mighty neighbours to the north inevitable. In the final part of his trilogy, Allan Frankovich shows the devastating effects of this confrontation. Completed in 1987, the culmination of three years' filming, this remarkable documentary is an exhaustive and riveting enquiry into the extent and nature of US policy in their 'own backyard'.

A fire in an oil-well means that anyone who volunteers to drive a consignment of nitroglycerine 300 miles over bumpy mountain roads can earn 2,000 dollars. The Wages of Fear features a masterly performance from Charles Vanel , who died recently.
