Modelo Prison in Barcelona has, like any other prison, its fair share of drug abusers and homosexuals. It also has an HIV infection rate of 50 per cent. Official estimates of the extent of AIDS in prisons across Europe vary widely. In Britain, where no official survey has been done, it is put at 0.1 per cent.
Can we in Britain learn lessons from this disastrous epidemic before it is too late? John Edginton examines the world of AIDS behind bars, and asks if a prison sentence could soon be a sentence of death?

Presented by Colin Blakemore 2: The Unfolding Mind Professor Blakemore's daughter, Sarah, goes back with him to Cambridge, her birthplace. Together they trace her development from the womb to the teenager she is now. He says, 'Consider what has to happen before we have the powers of perception, memory, thought and emotion. The brain's billions of nerve cells have to be created and distributed to form an incredible network.' On the way, alcohol, radiation even lack of stimulation can damage nerve cells at critical stages. There's an in-built timetable for a child's understanding of abstract ideas, language, a sense of self and even moral codes.
