Weather followed by Sweat of the Sun, Tears of the Moon
Third of an eight-part series Inca Cola
The Spaniards crushed the Inca empire and their descendants still control most of the wealth and power in Peru. Under the Incas, Peru was a land of plenty. Their descendants lead a precarious existence on impoverished small-holdings, or drift to city slums. With a third of the national budget going to the armed forces and another third on international debts, the generals get Exocets and the poor get nothing. Jack Pizzey investigates the Inca revival and interviews former president Belaunde Terry. Producer GEOFFREY BARNES (R)

The Spell of a Woman
Johannes Vermeer (1632-75) was born in Delft, lived there all his life and died there at the age of 43. 'We don't know much about Vermeer. We only know 27 perfect pictures that are undoubtedly the work of his maturity. They are about two things - women and art. Both prompted a drive as imperative as I know in any painter. For him tenderness and detachment alike are qualities of love.'
In the third in a series of six films Sir Lawrence Gowing invites us to share his enthusiasm and sympathy for the 'impeccable' work of the 17th-century Dutch artist. Film editor JULIAN MILLER
