For most young people an Operation Raleigh expedition is a chance to live and work with remote communities all over the world. For a few, it provides an opportunity to make a film.
Tonight's film, the first in a series of six, is made by a team from the National Film
School. It follows a young engineer from London's
Underground who leads a team up a glacier in the mountains of southern Chile. He has never been out of England before; the contrast between his normal urban life and these totally alien surroundings gives him a very different perspective on life: 'Ealing to Cockfosters - no problem. But how do they expect me to find a route up a mountain?'

A series featuring six major artists and writers who live and work in exile.

In Austria and Germany Erich Fried is a hero. He is their most famous living poet and a popular if controversial broadcaster. Fried has lived in North London since 1938 when the Nazis invaded his country and destroyed his family. He still writes only in German; his powerful and compassionate poems bear witness to half a century of European culture and politics. In the programme, Fried returns to the Vienna of his childhood and visits East and West Berlin. Neal Ascherson, the Observer's correspondent in Berlin in the 60s, assesses the relevance of his poetry to what Fried sees as the never-ending battle against the re-emergence of fascism.
