Narrated by Charlton Heston The skipper, Dennis Conner , was not a good loser. He had lost the America's Cup - and broken the longest winning run in sporting history: 132 years. That was in September 1983.
Written off as a has-been, he battled for three long years - first to be taken seriously and then for the right to try to win the Cup back from the triumphant Australians. When actor/director Maximilian Schell persuaded Marlene Dietrich to allow a detailed interview, she made one condition: she would be recorded in sound only. The result is a funny and moving tribute to a self-mocking but dogmatic star, illustrated with the best moments from her films and shows, and newsreel footage from her wartime tours.
Above all, it provides a rare insight into the difficulties of making a film biography when the subject is a little uncooperative.
