Andrew Sachs and Manuel drive to Pamplona, where the population doubles for the famous bull-running fiesta. Andrew consults
Hemingway, finds out who San Fermin was, walks the bull-running route with an expert, buys some presents in a market, stays away from the bullfight, but nevertheless triumphs in the bullring. Then he takes his leave on the shores of the Atlantic at San Sebastian.

Part 1 begins with Symphony No 6 by Sibelius - the most serene of his symphonies, written in 1923. Three years later Nielsen composed his Flute Concerto, whose humorous touches have been described by ROBERT SIMPSON as being 'of the profoundest and most sympathetic kind'.
