When Kewal Singh Bhullar came to this country from his village in northern India, he was just another of the penniless Asian immigrants who were beginning to arrive in Bradford at the start of the 1950s. Today he's a man of substance, rich beyond his wildest dreams with a multi-million pound clothing business, a house on millionaires' row and a Rolls in the drive. In tonight's film portrait he retraces the years of struggle, returning to the places that are the landmarks of his life.

In the year of the city's 750th anniversary, Russell Davies introduces a survey of contemporary culture in East and West Berlin, including:
Film: director Chris Petit , a former resident of the city, considers the way in which the look of Berlin has been transferred to film, and the problems that the cityscape poses for film-makers.
Performance: traditionally the home of nightclub culture,
Berlin is an influential centre of alternative performance in Germany. Multi-media musicians Die
Todliche Doris , singer Santrra Doring and club entrepreneur Monika Doring give a flavour of the current sub-culture in the West.
Writing: Berlin's famous intellectual cafe society still flourishes. At the Cafe
Einstein in the West lively literary debates are held. In the East the main debate is about how critical of the state a writer can - and should - be. Leading authors talk about this dilemma.
Art: since the 1920s Berlin has had a powerful visual arts tradition, continued in the West by a school of artists known as 'Die Junge Wilde' - which includes the bold painting of Rainer Fetting and the exotic work of Salome. And David Elliot examines East Berlin art, from the social realism of Amo Mohr to the sophisticated work of artists like Walter Libuda. Production assistant
