Jeffrey Tate conducts and discusses Schumann's 'Spring Symphony'
The last of three programmes re-examining some of the great romantic works for orchestra.
The first draft of Schumann's Symphony No 1 was completed in the incredibly short time of four days.
Schumann had no training in orchestration and was unsure how to express his romantic ideas in a classical form.
Nevertheless, Tate believes it is a work of genius that requires painstaking rehearsal to reveal its true youthful vigour and energy. He finds the first orchestral rehearsal 'like cleaning an oil painting - in this case removing an awful lot of varnish', revealing a clarity that is faithful to the original idea. The first of four parts starring
1907: the exuberant Ekdahl family celebrate Christmas. For 12-year-old Alexander this is a time of discovery: of his father's theatre, of the fantastic world of the magic lantern and of his own talent as a teller of ghost stories.
Bergman has described Fanny and Alexander, his farewell to the cinema, as the sum total of his life as a film-maker. The feature film edited from this television series won four Academy Awards.

Fredrik Egerman , a successful lawyer, has an inhibited teenage bride. When an old flame, the actress Desiree Armfeldt , comes to town Fredrik decides to renew their acquaintanceship. But their reunion is marred by the untimely entrance of Count Malcolm, Desiree's lover.
Bergman's light-hearted romance won him the Grand Prix for Best Comedy in Cannes in 1955, and inspired Stephen Sondheim's musical success A Little Night Music as well as Woody Allen's A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy.
