Robots Special
The humanoid robots of fiction and today's industrial robots are as far from each other as chalk from cheese. But slowly robots are being incorporated into systems capable of bringing some of the flexibility of man on to the factory floor. Robotics scientists are making great headway in giving robots vision, touch and even the ability to play a mean game of table tennis. Explaining developments is Professor Mike Brady , who recently returned to Britain from one of America's leading technological universities to run an Oxford research team. Research DAVID HARRISON

The Many Pranks of Richard Strauss
A television essay about Strauss's tone poem
Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks by Michael Tilson Thomas with the London Symphony Orchestra leader MICHAEL DAVIS
'Till Eulenspiegel is Strauss's most popular piece' claims Michael Tilson Thomas , the American conductor who is in charge of tonight's edition in the current Workshop series which explores the way music is written and performed. 'Audiences love it because it's short! Orchestral players enjoy it because there's a virtuoso challenge for each of them, while students of composition delight in working out all the canons and variations.' With Tilson Thomas as a guide, this programme gives Till
Eulenspiegel the Rashomon treatment, revealing different aspects of the same piece of music.

Presented by Russell Davies
Autobiography: The remarkable career of Anthony Burgess - novelist, poet, screenwriter and critic - began in 1960, when doctors told him he had a year to live. In those months, he wrote no fewer than five novels, including A Clockwork Orange, and went on to write, edit or translate more than 50 further volumes. Burgess now claims to be at work on the final chapter of his career: his autobiography. The first volume, Little Wilson and Big God, is published this week on his 70th birthday. Russell Davies visits Anthony Burgess in Venice.
Art: Is David Bomberg the great discovery of the British Art exhibition at the Royal Academy? Richard Cork puts the case for this long-neglected painter.
