Expedition Film Competition
The first of two programmes in which six amateur film teams compete for the Mick Burke Award. This trophy is given by the BBC and the Royal Geographical Society in memory of the BBC cameraman who died on Everest in 1975. The programme is introduced by Paul Heiney and the panel of judges chaired by Clare Francis-now a writer, but herself no stranger to adventure. She is joined by: Julian Pettifer , journalist and television presenter
Dr Marjorie Sweeting of the Royal Geographical Society, and Richard Taylor , a BBC television producer, who has made many films for The World About Us.
They will be selecting the best film made in the summer of 1983, when the six expeditions set out to illustrate their journeys under difficult and sometimes dangerous conditions.
Tonight the first three expeditions travel to:
West Africa, and the River Niger, retracing the route of the 19th-century explorer Mungo Park,
The highlands of Ecuador, to research conservation in the El Cajas National Park, and Northern Kenya, to study the traditional jewellery and decoration of the Turkana people.
Tomorrow the remaining three films will be screened, and the trophy presented to the winning team.
