On 4 October 1883 a Sunday School teacher in Glasgow, concerned at the lack of discipline in his class, asked 28 boys to meet him at Woodside Mission Hall to talk about setting up a Boys' Association. Thus William Smith became father of the Boys' Brigade, and in turn the BB inspired all the youth movements that followed.
Andrew Keir , as Sir William Smith , looks back over the 100 years; and Allan Wells , Cliff Richard , George Thomas and others tell of their interest in the movement.

3: Homage to Catalonia
'I remember saying once to Arthur Koestler "history stopped in 1936", at which he nodded in immediate understanding. We were both thinking of totalitarianism in general, but more particularly of the Spanish Civil War ... I know it is the fashion to say that most of recorded history is lies anyway but what is peculiar to our own age is the abandonment of the idea that history could be truthfully written.'
Orwell, like many of his generation, enlisted to fight on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War. Filmed in Barcelona and on the Huesca front, where he fought, tonight's film tells the story of Orwell's war. It begins as a heroic crusade for a beleaguered socialist state, and ends with disillusion and betrayal, with Orwell fleeing across the Spanish frontier, a wounded and wanted man. Among those appearing are
Stafford Cottman, Victor Alba
Enrique Ardroer , Ramon Jurado and Professor Bernard Crick

God's Acre
A place of death - but also a place of life. For over 1,000 years churchyards have been dedicated to the dead, and their loving commemoration by the living.
Secure from disturbance, churchyards have also become a network of unofficial nature reserves. Within their walls oak trees and yews live for centuries and seed their offspring for future generations. Bats in the belfry, barn owls in the tower, rear their young in peace. Meadow flowers, purged from surrounding farmland, find their refuge among the tomb-stones. Even the humble snail and the sexton beetle have a place in the churchyard.
This programme follows the year of one such churchyard in the New For-rest and its ancient links with the community.

Towards Totalitarianism?
Presented by Stephen Sedley , QC
Who will exercise the greater power in the future, the State or the Individual? Is it possible that by 2009 your right to have children will be determined by what kind of person you are; that all your activities be monitored by agents of the State? Will Big Brother really be watching us?
Stephen Sedley argues that this is already beginning to happen; that through subtle changes the individual is losing out to the forces of authority; that in the UK today enforced child care, police surveillance and secret court hearings pose a real threat.
After this film, Nick Ross chairs a discussion with a group of lawyers, social service and police chiefs - what kind of free society do we want?
