Donated to the City of Glasgow nearly 40 years ago, the Burrell Collection is now on show in its magnificent new gallery in Pollok Estate.
In 80 years of continuous collecting Sir William Burrell , a Glasgow ship owner, amassed over 8,000 items covering three continents and almost every period.
In the first of three programmes, John Julius Norwich with Dr Richard Marks , Keeper of the Collection, looks at Burrell's first love -the art of medieval Europe. On display are tapestries, stained glass and sculpture of rare quality, while massive stone arches and the reconstructed rooms of Burrell's Borders home, Hutton Castle, are ingeniously incorporated into the fabric of the building. Architect Barry Gasson talks about his award-winning design.

Caitlin Thomas in conversation with Vincent Kane
When Dylan Thomas died in New York in 1953 his widow moved to Italy in search of sobriety and peace.
With the help of Alcoholics Anonymous, and after six years of struggle, she gave up alcohol, but peace still evades her.
She now lives in Rome and talks frankly about her turbulent life with the poet, their drinking, their poverty, their fights; and also the difficulties she has faced in the years since his death.
