'Bruised for life' is how one young naval officer describes his short term of service. In 1980 he was one of the first intake of a trial three-and-a-half year commission. By the end of that period only three of the original 21 are still in the Royal Navy. What makes a young man want to train as a naval officer? Why did so many leave? Three who stayed the course, but left in October, confront these questions in a voyage of rediscovery on the River Dart - from Dartmouth, where it all started, until they could go no further.

In this film, introduced by Rene Cutforth, some who were not strangers - friends, relatives and fellow-broadcasters, who in their various ways loved the poet - give an account of the person he really was. The portrait that emerges, enriched by Thomas's own voice in poetry and prose, is different from the generally accepted picture of the inspired and irresponsible drunkard who somehow received a commemorative stone in Westminster Abbey.

The people of the beautiful valley of La Esperanza have seen a quarter of their young children die this year. The programme follows their struggle to stop the deaths.
In the next village a revolutionary health plan is succeeding. Can it be brought to La Esperanza and the rest of the world? If it can, 20,000 of the children who die every day could be saved.
