5.25 Australia Now
One of the most impressive areas to emerge recently in the rock music field is Australasia. As their film industry has blossomed so too has their rock music talent.
This documentary examines the contemporary scene in Australia through the eyes of the musicians themselves, with performances from 17 of their bands - including Men at Work, Midnight Oil, Mental As Anything, Little River Band, Split Enz, Icehouse, and the Aboriginal band No Fixed Address.
Feature p76

6.25 Duran Duran
Undoubtedly one of the most popular and successful bands of the moment is Duran Duran. Last November, at the climax of their British tour, they played London's Hammersmith Odeon, and this is the recording taken from those concerts, including many of their recent hits.

9.0 10cc Live in Concert

Introduced by Steve Blacknell

9.30 Randy Newman on Tour
Europe has always harboured a strong cult following for Randy Newman and his music. His sardonic manner seems more rooted in the tradition of European humour than that of most American songwriters. Often branded a cynic, a label he firmly refutes, he nevertheless tends to look at life through cracked glasses. This film follows him on his 1983 European Tour - with radio, TV, and concert-hall performances - and talks to him about his writing.
Feature p75

10.25 Spandau Ballet Over Britain
Spandau Ballet was one of the premier bands to emerge through the 'New Romantics' movement. For a while it looked as though their stylish presentation might overshadow their music, but this year saw them on a highly successful tour - Spandau Ballet Over Britain. During that tour their single, "True", hit the No.1 spot, as did the accompanying album. On 1 May they played London's Sadler's Wells Theatre and tonight's concert features the highlights.

11.0 American Graffiti
The feature film starring Richard Dreyfuss, Ronny Howard
A small Californian town: 1962. Four friends - about to leave for college - get together for a typical night's entertainment, centred on chasing girls and baiting the local police. Director George Lucas created one of the most successful films of all time with this nostalgic look at America in the early 60s. This free-wheeling, highly entertaining film has a memorable music score - made up of 50s rock hits.

12.55am Airplay - 9 June 1982
A day in the life of WNEW-FM - one of New York's rock 'n' roll radio stations. The camera goes behind the scenes and watches the broadcasters at work. Listen in on the newscaster and sports reporters, the executives planning the station's policies, the assistants gathering in the news and record chart positions and, of course, the DJs who pull the whole thing together; and against the sounds of WNEW: New York at work and play.

1.50 Guitar Heroes
The next 90 minutes feature two of rock's greatest guitarists - Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix.
Eric Clapton in Concert
This performance was recorded as a special Queen's Silver Jubilee celebration for BBC2's Old Grey Whistle Test in June 1977 from the Television Theatre at Shepherd's Bush.
and at 2.35 Jimi Hendrix
Nearly 14 years after his death at the early age of 28, Jimi Hendrix's influence can still be seen and heard in today's rock music. This film shows Hendrix in performance from his early club days in England right through to Woodstock, as well as catching him in backstage conversations.
Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton and Pete Townshend are also seen talking about his influence on rock music at that time; and Al Hendrix, Jimi's father, talks about the early days, before Jimi achieved international stardom.

3.25 Deadman's Curve
The feature film starring Richard Hatch as Jan Berry, Bruce Davison as Dean Torrence
The true story of two American pop stars who, in the late 50s and early 60s, performed a key role in popularising the 'California surfing sound' - songs that conjured up images of surf, sand and fast cars. But in 1966 their successful career came to an abrupt end.

5.0 The Police in the East
At the beginning of 1980, The Police embarked on a world tour that was to take them into territories way off the normal route taken by a touring rock band. It started conventionally enough in Japan and then went on to take in Hong Kong, India and Egypt. Anne Nightingale went along with a film crew to document the tour and to talk to Sting, Andy and Stewart.

5.55-6.15* And So to Bed...
David Hepworth, Mark Ellen, Anne Nightingale and Steve Blacknell round off the 15 hours of Rock Around the Clock and close with the video most requested by OGWT viewers over the last six years: from the 1976 Knebworth Festival Lynyrd Skynrd playing the song that established them as a world-class band, "Freebird".
