9.30 Randy Newman on Tour
Europe has always harboured a strong cult following for Randy Newman and his music. His sardonic manner seems more rooted in the tradition of European humour than that of most American songwriters. Often branded a cynic, a label he firmly refutes, he nevertheless tends to look at life through cracked glasses. This film follows him on his 1983 European Tour - with radio, TV, and concert-hall performances - and talks to him about his writing.
Feature p75
10.25 Spandau Ballet Over Britain
Spandau Ballet was one of the premier bands to emerge through the 'New Romantics' movement. For a while it looked as though their stylish presentation might overshadow their music, but this year saw them on a highly successful tour - Spandau Ballet Over Britain. During that tour their single, "True", hit the No.1 spot, as did the accompanying album. On 1 May they played London's Sadler's Wells Theatre and tonight's concert features the highlights.
11.0 American Graffiti
The feature film starring Richard Dreyfuss, Ronny Howard
A small Californian town: 1962. Four friends - about to leave for college - get together for a typical night's entertainment, centred on chasing girls and baiting the local police. Director George Lucas created one of the most successful films of all time with this nostalgic look at America in the early 60s. This free-wheeling, highly entertaining film has a memorable music score - made up of 50s rock hits.

Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton and Pete Townshend are also seen talking about his influence on rock music at that time; and Al Hendrix, Jimi's father, talks about the early days, before Jimi achieved international stardom.

3.25 Deadman's Curve
The feature film starring Richard Hatch as Jan Berry, Bruce Davison as Dean Torrence
The true story of two American pop stars who, in the late 50s and early 60s, performed a key role in popularising the 'California surfing sound' - songs that conjured up images of surf, sand and fast cars. But in 1966 their successful career came to an abrupt end.

5.0 The Police in the East
At the beginning of 1980, The Police embarked on a world tour that was to take them into territories way off the normal route taken by a touring rock band. It started conventionally enough in Japan and then went on to take in Hong Kong, India and Egypt. Anne Nightingale went along with a film crew to document the tour and to talk to Sting, Andy and Stewart.
