England v New Zealand from The Oval First Day

GEOFF HOWARTH , the New Zealand Captain, will be hoping that his team can break their ' duck' on his home ground. He will also remember that New Zealand have never beaten England in any form of international cricket until their one-day successes last winter.

3: My Dear Friends, the Land is VeryUgly
For more than 1,000 years, the vast Rajasthan desert was virtually uninhabited. But in 1958 work began on a canal which will eventually be four times longer than the Suez Canal and will transform two-and-a-half million acres of barren waste into rich farmland. And thousands of families like Rawat Ram's, who were farm labourers before they moved here eight years ago, now have land of their own - and are better off than they could once have imagined.

John Reid stands accused of sheepstealing and, if found guilty, will almost certainly hang. Boswell, as his defence advocate, has not only the problem of a hostile bench of judges, but is racked with doubt as to his client's innocence or guilt. However, he is convinced that no matter what the verdict and at no matter what cost, John Reid will not hang.

The Day War Broke Out
At 11 o'clock on Sunday 3 September 1939 the British ultimatum that Germany should withdraw from Poland expired. The now familiar words of Neville Chamberlain announced on BBC Radio at 11.17 am, 'This country is at war with Germany'.
Contributors to the series recall the immediate events leading up to this declaration of war and the happenings of that day, silhouetted against a background of tremendous thunderstorms and surprise air-raid alerts. The catch-phrase ' the day war broke out' was in its infancy but, for this series, 3 September 1939 marks the end of an era in which British ambivalence towards Nazi Germany was finally exorcised.
