Rain seeped through the roofs; there were holes in the ceilings, no flushing lavatories, no hot water. And damp was everywhere. That was in 1974, when Salford Council, failing to make repairs, told Its tenants in Lower Broughton that they would be re-housed, but not for at least four years.
The tenants went to law. Their action reached the House of Lords, which ordered repairs. The Council pulled the houses down. The tenants were rehoused.
Today, eight years later, Harold Williamson finds that the new housing has brought new problems. They are problems familiar to almost all communities which have been uprooted from their old, familiar neighbourhood ...
