A second series of 12 programmes 1: Volumes (I)
Even simple shapes like the sphere and cone can be deceptive. But once you've chosen a unit and begun to tackle volumes systematically, the sphere, the cone and the more familiar cylinder turn out to be surprisingly related.

Last October at CERN'S giant particle accelerator near Geneva, switches were thrown, buttons pressed and, at speeds close to the speed of light, beams of matter and anti-matter were smashed into violent collision. The hunt was on for two new and unimaginably short-lived subatomic particles which, if found, would take physicists a huge step forward towards their ultimate dream - to unite all the forces of nature in a single framework.

It was the culmination of four years' intensive effort, four years in which BBC cameras have followed the international team of scientists as they pioneered and perfected new equipment and techniques, argued theory in homes and laboratories, and struggled with experiments at the limits of modern technology. Now, with the first results just emerging, "Horizon" reports on the build-up and climax, the frustrations and triumphs of one of the momentous - and expensive - experiments in modern science.

Who are the Palestinians?
Leila Mantoura was born in Jerusalem in 1927, youngest child of a Christian Arab doctor and his wife. Palestine was the family's home, and they saw no reason to abandon it. But since 1948 Leila has lived in exile, first in Lebanon, now in London. What happened to her? And has she discarded her Palestinian identity?
